Sciatica describes pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg due to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or related nerve roots. Symptoms may include buttock pain, shooting leg pain, tingling, numbness, burning, weakness or pain made worse by sitting, bending, coughing or walking. NHS guidance lists exercises, stretches, physiotherapy, manual therapy and pain management as common treatment options for sciatica.
Sciatica can arise from disc irritation, joint dysfunction, spinal narrowing, pelvic mechanics, muscle guarding or nerve sensitivity. Not all leg pain is sciatica, so accurate diagnosis matters.
Assessment and treatment
At Sayer Clinics, the first appointment includes medical history, neurological testing, orthopaedic examination, spinal and pelvic assessment, and digital X-ray if clinically indicated and consented. If symptoms suggest serious nerve compression or another medical concern, referral for further imaging or medical care may be advised.
Treatment may include chiropractic treatment, lumbar and pelvic mobilisation, soft-tissue therapy, nerve mobility advice, massage, postural advice, graded exercises and practical guidance on sitting, lifting, sleeping and walking.
The aim is to reduce nerve irritation, restore movement and help patients regain confidence in using their back and leg.
Your first consultation includes a full medical history, clinical examination, diagnosis, consented digital X-ray where clinically indicated, first treatment session and clear aftercare advice. Treatment is always adapted to your condition, examination findings, medical history and comfort level. Where symptoms suggest a condition requiring medical investigation, we will advise appropriate referral.
